The hashtag #JusticeForZainab has been trending on twitter for days now. It has sparked anger and outrage both online and on the streets. Zainab, is a six-year old girl from Pakistan, was raped and found in a rubbish dump in Kasur, Punjab province after several days of disappearance.
The hashtag began trending around the world after activist for the Pakistan opposition party Awami Tehreek used the said hashtag which makes the origin more or less political. It has since been used by many Pakistan political activists to deride the perceived failings of the local authorities, given the spate of abductions, sexual assaults and killings in the area, which have included 12 similar murders in the past two years.
A number of Pakistani celebrities also posted their sadness on twitter and instagram. Prominent human rights campaigner and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai also took to Twitter to call for the authorities to take action. Her tweet is the most retweeted use of #JusticeForZainab.
