What is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin or HCG? Sources claim that Manny Ramirez was using Human Chorionic Gonadotropin HCG that resulted in his 50 game Major League Baseball suspension.
HCG is popular among steroid users because it can mitigate the side effects of ending a cycle of the drugs. The body may stop producing testosterone when users go off steroids, which can cause sperm counts to decrease and testicles to shrink.
So what is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin or HCG? Yahoo Health explains it as:
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is given as an injection under the skin or into a muscle. …. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that supports the normal development of an egg in a woman’s ovary, and stimulates the release of the egg during ovulation.
HCG is used to cause ovulation and to treat infertility in women, and to increase sperm count in men. HCG is also used in young boys when their testicles have not dropped down into the scrotum normally. This can be caused by a pituitary gland disorder. HCG may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
ESPN sources say that Major League Baseball tests showed that Ramirez had testosterone in his body that was not natural and came from an artificial source. Two people with knowledge of the case told ESPN’s Mark Fainaru-Wada and T.J. Quinn. The sources said that in addition to the artificial testosterone, Ramirez was identified as using the female fertility drug human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG.
The sources said Ramirez was suspended for using HCG because baseball had documentation to prove his use of the drug. A Major League Baseball source said Ramirez’s representatives indicated they would fight a suspension for using artificial testosterone.
Ramirez said today of the suspension:
“Recently, I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me. Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me. Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy.
Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now. I do want to say one other thing; I’ve taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to Mr. McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, Mr. Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I’m sorry about this whole situation.
