Britains Got Talent Susan Boyle has vowed to remain humble following her instant success. Since becoming a Youtube sensation over night, the Scottish charity worker has welcomed American media outlets into her home for interviews via satellite.
After Boyle’s appearance on the Early Show and Anderson Cooper yesterday, the 47-year-old sat down to talk to CNN’s ‘American Morning’ today.
“I’m gobsmacked, absolutely gobsmacked,” Boyle told American Morning of her sudden fame. “I’m enjoying every second of it.”
This adjective from Boyle has become very popular and everybody seems to be very interested on what it means. And those who have heard Scotland’s singing sensation might describe themselves as “gobsmacked” as well–even if the adjective is unfamiliar.
The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English (2006) defines “gobsmacked” as “being speechless or lost for words as the result of amazement or shock.” Similarly, Sara Tulloch, author of The Oxford Dictionary of New Words (1991), offers the definition “astounded, flabbergasted; speechless or incoherent with amazement; overawed.”
