The Republican governor of South Carolina acknowledged today that he has been having an affair during the past year. Sanford just returned from his South American adventure. He said he had wanted something more “exotic” than an Appalachian hike.

After returning from Argentina, Mark Sanford apologizes to his wife, his four children and others on a press conference.

“I’ve let down a lot of people - that’s the bottom line,” the governor said. “If you were to look at God’s laws, they are in every instance designed to protect people from themselves… The biggest self of self is indeed self. Sin is indeed grounded in this notion of what is it that I want, as opposed to someone else.”

“The bottom line is this: I have been unfaithful to my wife,” he said. The relationship started with “casual email back and forth,” but then “recently over this last year developed into something much more than that… I hurt my wife, I hurt my boys… I hurt a lot of different folks… and all I can say is that I apologize.”

“Got back an hour ago to civilization and am now in Columbia after what was for me a glorious break from reality down at the farm. No phones ringing and tangible evidence of a day’s labors. Though I have started every day by 6 this morning woke at 4:30, I guess since my body knew it was the last day, and I went out and ran the excavator with lights until the sun came up.
