Dr. Regina Benjamin was chosen by President barrack Obama as the next Surgeon General several months after CNN’s Sanjay Gupta withdrew his name from consideration for surgeon general. Dr. Regina Benjamin MD is a family physician from Alabama and will be filling the country’s most important public-health post which is surgeon general.

“Benjamin was the first black woman to head a state medical society, received the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights and just last fall received a McArthur Foundation ‘genius grant.’ But she made headlines in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, with her determination to rebuild her rural health clinic Bayou La Batre, Ala., which serves 4,400 patients who would be hard-pressed to find care elsewhere.”

President Barrack Obama is set to make the announcement later today. Congratulations to Dr. Regina Benjamin MD, our new Surgeon General.
