Denise Amber Lee killer Michael King appeared in court clean-shaven and short-haired at the Silvertooth Judicial Center. Michael King is accused of the murder and rape of Denise Amber Lee. Judge Economou presided over the hearings, and King’s public defender Carolyn Schlemmer was at his side.
Also present in the courtroom was Nathan Lee, the victim’s husband; and Rick Goff, the victim’s father. Wednesday’s hearing discussed whether or not to suppress King’s statements made after his arrest on I-75 on January 17, 2008 and at the North Port Police Department afterwards. The state says they would leave many statements out because of legal issues. They say King was advised of his rights after and not before their questioning.
King’s cousin, Harold Muxlow, is expected to be on the stand in a hearing Thursday morning, to determine whether or not his interview with authorities will be used in the trial, since he is a witness of the state.
Jury selection in the trial is set to begin August 17th.
