Darius Rucker wins New Artist award at the 2009 CMA Awards! Darius (not Hootie) Rucker became the first black country music singer to win New Artist of the Year Award.
It’s been a big year for Darius Rucker going from adult contemporary singer to country artist. If you’ve followed him, you’ve seen the incredible music Darius has put out. His first album Learn to Live has been a commercial smash. Tonight Darius gets the CMA Best New Artist award. In accepting, Darius told the audience:
“First of all, to the fans, thank y’all for accepting me. And I think most importantly, to country radio, you took a chance on a pop singer from Charleston, S.C. Thank you so much for that!”
