The Scotish singer wowed Britain’s Got Talent judges and became an Internet viral video sensation after her first performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables. She has since made appearances on Larry King Live, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and has even been referenced on The Simpsons.
Broadway fans will know the wonderful appropriateness in the song selection of Memory by Boyle. Memory is from the musical Cats, sung by the character Grizabella.
Grizabella appears in the musical as an older cat, past her younger prime in looks, asking to be reborn to a young vibrant youth to experience again what only remains now a memory.
While Broadway audiences saw Betty Buckley originate the role in New York, for London residents the original West End production featured Elaine Paige originating the role!
Boyle had said during her first appearance on Britians Got Talent that she wished to be “as successful as” Elaine Paige. In choosing the song, Boyle is giving tribute to her idol and potentially her future duet companion. Paige has recently said he wants to sing a duet with Boyle whom she calls “a role model for everyone who has a dream”.
